Emmanuelle and Bertrand AMART have created the name of Château Venus when they have bought their vineyard. They were looking for a name which would sum up and put in relief all the efforts accomplished in the vines and in the cellar. So they have chosen Venus.
First of all, it is the goddess who protects the plough. The work of the soils is an important point in the tending of the vines. But Venus also represents the fineness, the elegance and the beauty : all these words correspond well with the products made at this domain.
The vines stretch on 8.5 hectares planted with red grape varieties : 70 % of Merlot and 30 % of Cabernet Sauvignon.
We completely respect the traditions and plough the totality of the property. All the work done such as the green harvest and the thining out is realised by hand.
The Wine Making process
The cellar is equiped with stainless steel tanks which have a system of temperature control.
When the grapes arrive during the harvest, we proceed to a cold maceration of about 7 days at a temperature of less
than 10°c to allow a better conservation of the aromas and the fixation of the color (tannins and antocyanins). We make
pump overs every day till the end of the fermentation in order to extract the most of color and fruit. At the end of the
fermentations, we put the wines into barrels.
The barrel cellar - The cellar is composed with 64 barrels : 90% of French oak and 10% of American oak. The wines are racked
every 3 months in fonction of their evolution and are aged during 12 months. The final touch consists in
blending the different lots in order they express the best of their quality in bottle.
What About Graves
although red wines dominate the total production. Graves AOC is also the name of one Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) which covers most, but not all of the Graves subregion.
The name Graves derives from its intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result of glaciers from the Ice Age, which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of some of the top winemaking estates.
Why Working With Chateau Venus
As always this is a question of who you meet and when. Bertrand and Emanuelle are friends with Vincent Lacoste at Chateau de Cranne. When I started with Chateau de Cranne, vincent let me taste Chateau Venus Graves. I liked the wines but the timing was not good.
2 years later timing was much better and we start working together.
I like Bertrand Philosophie. Maximum of work in the vineyard. As less as possible in the cellar.
Wines are great.
